Clerk of Courts

The Clerk of Courts is responsible for maintaining the official records and files for all cases brought before the county's Circuit Court. This office serves as the custodian of court documents and ensures that court records are accurately maintained and accessible in accordance with state law.

The Clerk of Courts processes a wide variety of legal matters, including civil cases, small claims, divorces, adoptions, child support, restitution, fines, and other court-related proceedings. The office also collects and distributes court-ordered payments and assists the public, attorneys, law enforcement, and the judiciary with court records and case information.

In some counties, the Clerk of Courts may also be appointed to serve as a lay magistrate, performing certain judicial duties as authorized by South Dakota law.

The Clerk of Courts plays an essential role in supporting the judicial system by ensuring the efficient administration of court records and providing professional service to the public and the courts.
