COUNTY COMMISSIONERS

Each county is governed by a Board of County Commissioners consisting of three to five members elected to staggered four-year terms. The Board of Commissioners serves as the county's governing body and is responsible for overseeing the services and operations of all county offices.

County Commissioners have a wide range of duties established by South Dakota law. These responsibilities include the care, preservation, or sale of county property; auditing the accounts of county officers responsible for the management, collection, or disbursement of county funds; levying taxes; overseeing the construction, maintenance, and repair of county bridges; opening, altering, vacating, and maintaining county highways; acquiring land for courthouses, jails, and other county facilities; and serving as the County Board of Equalization to review and equalize property assessments as provided by law.

The Board is also responsible for providing the equipment and supplies necessary for county offices to operate efficiently, supervising the county's financial affairs to ensure responsible fiscal management, and adopting and amending ordinances related to zoning, solid waste, water management, and other matters affecting the health, safety, and welfare of the county. In addition to these statutory responsibilities, County Commissioners address a wide variety of issues that arise as they work to serve the needs and interests of county residents.
