Highway Department
The County Highway Superintendent, under the direction of the Board of County Commissioners, is responsible for the construction, maintenance, and repair of the county's roads, bridges, and related infrastructure. The Highway Department works year-round to provide safe and reliable transportation for residents, businesses, emergency services, school buses, and visitors.
Responsibilities of the Highway Superintendent include planning and supervising road and bridge projects, overseeing maintenance operations, directing department personnel, managing equipment and materials, and maintaining accurate records of work performed and associated costs. In many counties, the Highway Department also provides maintenance services for township roads through cooperative agreements.
The Highway Superintendent reviews and approves all bills related to county road and bridge maintenance before payment. Funding for these projects and ongoing maintenance is provided through the County Road and Bridge Fund.
From snow and ice removal during the winter to graveling, grading, culvert replacement, bridge maintenance, mowing, signing, and road improvements throughout the year, the Highway Department is committed to maintaining a safe and efficient transportation system that serves the needs of Deuel County residents and visitors.
