Register of Deeds
The Register of Deeds is an elected official who serves as the official custodian of Deuel County's permanent public records. Often referred to as the county's "library of land records," the Register of Deeds is responsible for recording, preserving, and providing access to documents that affect real property ownership and other official records.
The office records and maintains a complete, accurate, and permanent record of documents including:

The Register of Deeds maintains these records in both computerized and digitally scanned formats, making them readily accessible to the public. Copies of many recorded documents may be obtained by visiting the office, calling, or submitting a request by email.

Vital Records
The Register of Deeds is authorized to issue certified copies of South Dakota birth, death, and marriage certificates to eligible applicants.
The fee for certified copies is $15.00 per certificate.

Our office also issues Marriage Licenses to anyone who plans to get married in South Dakota for a cost of $40.00. Marriage licenses can be obtained 90 days prior to the marriage. Both spouses need to be present and have a photo ID to apply. Individuals under the age of 18 will need a parent or guardian to sign the application.
